Preparing for Investor Presentations
Most professional investors (angels, venture capitalists and others) are very busy and review numerous investment opportunities, so the presentation needs to be kept short and to the point. The presentation should always be put in writing and in an electronic format, such as PowerPoint. All of the key information for the initial presentation should be provided in 12-18 slides.
The objective in the initial investor presentation is not to tell the complete story but to communicate the opportunity so that the investor will want to learn more about the company. An effective presentation should:
- Highlight the key elements of the business
- Provide sufficient detail but succinctly (often in as few as 10 minutes but never more than 30 minutes)
- Have a professional look
- Clearly answer the following:
- Who the company and the team are
- What the business/product/service is
- Who will buy the product and why
- Who the competition is and what the competitive advantage is
- How the product will be sold
- How money will be made from the product
- How much money is needed and what will be done with it
- How will the investor make money
